Electric Cars

Electric cars - as their name suggests - are cars that are run on electric power sources rather than on standard fuels and a combustion engine. These cars are powered by rechargeable packs of batteries that can be used in tandem with a standard power source (i.e. in a hybrid car) or as a stand-alone power source.

If your electric car is a hybrid then the batteries will be charged by the standard engine. If, however, your car is solely powered by electric options then it will need to be recharged manually via the mains. Most people simply charge up their batteries in this way overnight when they are not using the car. And, many electric cars being manufactured nowadays will also have what is known as regenerative brakes. Here the braking system itself is also used to charge your batteries when the car is being used.

Many electric cars on sale at the moment tend to be smaller and lighter than other vehicles. The mileage that a car can do on a charge varies from model to model - some can do up to 100+ miles before they need recharging. Speeds are also lower here and range up to around 40-60mph - for this reason many people use electric cars in towns and cities where length of journey and speed are not a problem.
