Converting a Car to Run on LPG

LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) is a type of natural fuel that can be used to run vehicles. It is made up from propane and butane gases. Many people nowadays are converting a car to run on LPG due to the fact that this fuel is more environmentally friendly than petrol or diesel fuels and that it is a lot cheaper to buy. At the moment LPG costs about half what you would pay for other fuels.

The majority of standard four stroke spark ignition cars can be converted to run on LPG. In most cases this will take the form of converting the engine to be able to run on a bi-fuel basis (i.e. on LPG or on petrol). In some cases cars can be converted to run on LPG and diesel but this is probably not as common at this stage. This kind of bi-fuel system means that you can switch between LPG and petrol quite easily - even when you are driving.

When you convert your car to run on LPG you basically add a second fuel facility to the vehicle which will need its own fuel tank. This is often placed in a wheel well or under the car itself. The type of LPG conversion you have will depend on the type of car you want converted.

For this reason it is always recommended that you use an experienced and authorised conversion company to do this kind of thing. The person/company that converts your car, for example, should be LPGA approved. Although conversion may not be cheap here the savings you will make on fuel and running costs will usually pay for the conversion quite quickly but it is wise to check that you have a garage near you that sells LPG so you can actually buy it after conversion to see the cost benefits. You may also see savings on your road tax as the DVLA will give discounts if your vehicle matches qualifying criteria. London drivers will also be given discounts on congestion charges if their vehicle qualifies for them.
